If you’ve been a stay-at-home parent for the past several years, the prospect of returning to work can feel extremely stimulating and scary at the same time. After so many years out of the workforce, how are you supposed to market your "rusty" skills anyway? By celebrating all the amazing things you have learnt and mastered as a stay-at-home parent, of course!

As a stay-at-home parent you have likely garnered a lot of life experiences that would be beneficial to an employer, but how do you do that without opening yourself up for unintentional (or worse yet, intentional) hiring manager biases? Let’s face it, while you are gaining valuable skills such as budgeting, organizing, mediating, and more, hiring managers are having their own experiences that may influence future hiring decisions, for the better or the worse.

Resume Writing Tips:

Use your real estate wisely! Recruiters take on average 7 seconds to review a resume before they have moved on to the next one making the top ½ of your first page some of the most valuable real estate. Use this space to incorporate an overview statement that celebrates that you are the right candidate for the role (1 to 3 sentences, up to 4 lines), add in your skills section, and follow that up with your formal education (if applicable).

Feature your newly developed skills. One way to showcase your newly developed skills, in combination with your previous skills, would be to incorporate them into your skills section (2-4 lines).

Herding cats (okay, maybe not this last one, but you get the idea!)

Minimize the opportunity for unintentional biases. When building your resume, consider ways to showcase your skills (see the example above!), while also minimizing the possibility of biases. For example, removing dates from your formal education minimizes the opportunity for age bias.

Compliment your resume with a cover letter. Set yourself apart from the competition by investing time into crafting a targeted cover letter that lets the employer know that you are genuinely interested in becoming a part of their team.

Indeed finds jobs for more individuals than all other online sites combined, according to the Top Sources of Hire report from SilkRoad, a report based on data gathered from 14 million applications, 655,000 interviews and 329,000 hires.

Indeed.ca is a top resource for job seekers AND employers. While job seekers can search from millions of posted job opportunities, did you also know that employers are doing the same?

Employers are proactively seeking candidates through Indeed’s 90 million-strong resume database. Using keyword searches based on skills, education, job titles, previous employers, and more, employers are not simply waiting for their preferred candidate to apply to them, they are proactively searching through resumes just as you are proactively searching through job postings.

Do you have what it takes to get noticed? Is your resume available on Indeed? It is up-to-date, or is it missing relevant work experience, education, etc. that would help to set your resume apart from the 90 million other posted resumes?

Posting your resume to Indeed is easy, simply create a profile then upload OR build your Indeed resume. By uploading or building your resume within Indeed you are agreeing to create a public resume, that is, a resume that is searchable by employers and recruiters.

While employers will be able to see your resume online, including your name, your contact information is kept hidden. If an employer or recruiter feels that you are a possible match for their hiring needs, they will email you via your Indeed email, an email established for your privacy that is directed to your personal email account – no need to log back into Indeed to check for possible messages.

Once you receive an email from a prospective employer you can confirm your interest or decline. If you confirm, then the employer will have access to your contact information including email and phone number.

Note : While you will have completed an online application within Indeed, once you are engaging with a prospective employer, you may be asked to complete an application within their system. The two systems are NOT connected. With the use of applicant tracking systems (ATS) by more and more employers, having your resume within the prospective employer’s ATS is often how a recruiter will share your interest with their hiring managers, and in many cases, offers are also generated from your online profile built within their system. So, while it may seem redundant to what you have already done, it is a key step in confirming your interest and having your application moved through an employer’s selection process.

While I would argue that having an updated resume is up there with having an updated Will in importance, most have a dated, and in many cases a VERY dated, resume – in content, format, and style.

If your resume aligns with one or more of the narratives below, it is time for an upgrade!

The Job Description Resume. We’ve likely all had a variation of this one at some point in our careers, after all, it was pretty much the norm…back in the day. You know the one, the one that lists every job task and seems to overtake each page! NOT a clear and concise resume, and not aligned with the current times.

Recommendation: DELETE the description and REPLACE it with 2-5 accomplishments. How did you move the business forward? What legacy did you/are you leaving behind? What goals did you hit or exceed? What processes did you refine?

The History Lesson Resume. Be proud of all that you have accomplished, your history is filled with lessons and learnings and is what brought you to where you are today. However, your pet-sitting job from 20+ years ago is not going to be what lands you your next opportunity.

Recommendation: Focus your resume on your professional achievements including career, volunteer, and academic from within the last 10-15 years.

Sending Out Your Resume and Hearing Crickets in Return? Read on BEFORE Sending Out Another Resume.

Feeling frustrated from sending out resume after resume and hearing nothing in return? The harsh reality is, if you keep doing what you have always done, you will most likely continue to get what you have always gotten. If you are ready to see a change, read on BEFORE sending out another resume!

1. A Resume Template May Be the Problem.

As a Recruiter with nearly two decades of experience, I can tell you firsthand that while templates may look pretty, there is a distinct risk that some, if not all, of your information will be lost in translation during the uploading process. And for those that do translate, the content is often not customized to the specific job posting or company.

All too often I see social media posts where one person is crying out for help, and another person… okay, who am I kidding… multiple people say, “Use a template!” While templates (e.g., with photos, tables, or graphics) may look pretty, they are not recommended for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

Emailing or hand-delivering your resume? Same rule applies. Emailed and hand-delivered resumes are manually uploaded to an employer’s candidate tracking system, and likewise need to be ATS friendly.

2. A One-Size-Fits-All Approach is a Thing of the Past

Tailor your resume to answer the needs and pain points of the company. For example, if the role requires a specific license or skill set, strategically place that information where it can be immediately seen (i.e., within the top 1/3 of the first page).

On average you have just 5-7 seconds to hook your reader’s attention. If your audience is required to hunt through your resume to find the skills, experience, and education/licenses that they are looking for, then they have already swiped left and moved on to the next applicant.

Generic resumes are a thing of the past. Hiring managers and recruiters want to see that you have read their job posting and that you have taken the time and effort to tailor your resume to align with the skills and experiences that they are seeking. It shows genuine interest and begins to showcase some of your skills, e.g., your attention to detail.

3. No cover letter, no worries! Right?

Your cover letter is NOT a repeat of your resume. A well-written cover letter is an opportunity to connect more personally with the prospective employer. It is an opportunity to share your “why?”

Why you are excited to apply for their open opportunity AND why you want to work for them. Perhaps in the past you have been directly impacted by their services, or perhaps there is something in their mission, vision, or value statement that you connect with. Do your research. Finding the RIGHT opportunity takes work. Focus on quality, not quantity in your career search.

The truth is, while not every prospective employer will read your cover letter – they will appreciate the effort that was made to provide a tailored one. So, while it may not always be thoroughly read, including a cover letter with your resume does serve a greater purpose and can be that extra edge that sets you apart from the competition. After all, your cover letter is a marketing tool, and you are the product!

4. You’re Listing Job Responsibilities instead of Accomplishments

Showcase the accomplishments that you have achieved that address the hiring needs of the prospective employer using real, hard facts.

For example, if you are applying for a sales role, rather than saying that you “made sales calls,” talk about your average number of daily or weekly sales calls, your conversion rate, and the positive impact you made on the bottom line. Providing clear statements about your achievements will go much further with the hiring manager than listing generic job tasks and responsibilities.

Gone are the days of copying and pasting the details from our job descriptions into our resumes. Nowadays, the resumes that are getting the most notice are the resumes that paint a picture for the hiring manager – a picture that helps them to visualize the candidate within their organization and solving their pain points.
